HO HO HO!!

Today we had our Year 3-6  Christmas Concert, marking the end of the year.  We looked fab in our festive outfits and sang beautifully- we also had Sophia. Dan, Millie and Esme playing the violin and some of us shared our "What Christmas means to me" thoughts.
Tomorrow is our last day as a class in Room 15, and I'd like to say thanks for being a great Year 3 class everyone! Thanks also to all the parents who have helped throughout the year.  I hope Santa is good to all of you and that you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year - enjoy the holidays!

Fishing at the Wharf!

As part of our EOTC week, we made fishing rods and went down to Rona Wharf to try our hands! No fish were caught, but we had great fun and Cella caught a crab, well done!
Thanks to all the helpers who joined us!

Everybody Everywhere Needs Water!

This term we have been looking at the water cycle, and what we use water for. We have also been thinking about how much we use, and whether we could save water somehow.

After reading about the use of water in different countries, we also realised how lucky we were to have water on tap, as we read about the problems some countries face

One of our homework activities was to design a water carrier - we tested them out and some were really creative- have a look at the photos!

Last Friday, to finish off our Water Unit, we had a Wacky Hair Day and brought in a gold coin donation to raise money for a World Vision water gift. Have a look at the link on the right to see what we could buy- all the Year 3 and 4 classes together raised over $400. Well done everyone!

Solar eclipse

Today we were lucky enough to witness the solar eclipse at school. As it was so sunny it was perfect to see the shadow of the moon gradually blocking the sun.
We used special glasses called "Eclipse shades" to look at the sun - it's far too bright to look at directly - and saw a bright orange crescent shaped sun, instead of the usual round shape.
We were amazed how much cooler it went as the sun was blocked out, and the shadows on the ground were a lot clearer too. Thanks Dan for bringing in some glasses - it was amazing!

Sporty stuff!

This week was a busy sporting week with Athletics on Monday and cricket with Cricket Wellington on Friday.
On Monday we did sprints, shot put, quoits, high jump, long jump and vortex events, followed by house and class relay races.  We were so lucky with the weather and had a great day.
On Friday, Cricket Wellington came to school to take us through the basics of cricket, and we practiced the important skills of bowling, batting and fielding. Thank you Cricket Wellington! Let's hope the summer weather stays for a while!

The Power of Persuasion!

We have been looking at Persuasive Writing in class. How can we convince someone of our opinion..? By presenting our argument, giving at least 3 good reasons, and backing them up with more information.
We have debated whether we should have robot helpers, wear uniform at school and whether or not homework is a good thing...a mixed opinion but some very valid points were made!
We have been using an online Persuasion map to help us plan our arguments - see the link under Literacy links. Is there something you feel strongly about..?

Ancient Greek Day

This term we have been learning about Ancient Greece, and have been studying myths, the Gods, the Ancient Olympics, home life at the time and what the Ancient Greeks ate and wore.
Yesterday Year 3 and 4 all finished off our Inquiry Unit by having a Greek feast- we dressed up in 'Ancient Greek' clothing and brought in some Greek food for our feast. We had olives, grapes, feta and other cheese, pita bread and Greek yoghurt, honey, baklava and 'tsoureki', a traditional Greek bread made by Sophia, as well as some Greek 'wine' and goblets provided by Harry!
A big thank you to all the parents who provided such a delicious feast!
